Western Sydney University has become the target of a significant scam involving mass emails sent to students and alumni, some of which falsely asserted that certain degrees had been rescinded.

Two different emails appear to have been sent from accounts where students and alumni were told that their degrees were “revoked”.

One of these fraudulent emails stated, “We regret to inform you that, following a thorough review, it has been decided to permanently exclude you from any future studies at Western Sydney University. Consequently, any certificates or awards previously issued to you are now revoked,” as reported by 9news.com.au.

The university told 9news.com.au it was aware of the “fraudulent” emails.

A spokesperson for Western Sydney University commented, “The university is aware of these deceptive emails sent to students and graduates, with false claims about exclusions from the university or revoked qualifications.”

“These emails are not authentic and did not originate from the university. We are actively informing recipients that this email is a scam and have notified NSW Police.”

“We sincerely apologise for any concern this may have caused.”

The university said it couldn’t give any further comment due to the incident being part of an ongoing police investigation.

9news.com.au has contacted NSW Police for comment.

Western Sydney University was involved in another data breach earlier this year, when the personal data of around 10,000 students ended up on the dark web.
A former student was charged over the attack and fronted court in August.
