Bendigo citizen's arrest

A brave Bendigo father has tackled a would-be thief to the ground in a dramatic citizen’s arrest at a Victorian jewellery store.

The suspect forcefully broke open display cases at Stearns Showcase Jewellers using a hammer, right in front of frightened employees and customers during an audacious robbery attempt in broad daylight.

After hearing what sounded like gunshots and screams for help, 31-year-old Anthony Haby jumped into action.

“I’m not a hero, I’m just a everyday bloke, doing what needed to be done,” Haby told 9News.

“People needed help so we helped. It’s just something I think any normal person would do really.”

While the brave father held down the would-be thief, his partner Jane Fleming helped terrified staff.

“We just heard screams, terrifying screams and didn’t even think about it just went in,” Fleming told 9News.

Minutes later security and police arrived and cuffed the man, aged in his 20s.

“He was amazing – to not think of himself and put himself in danger – and he was straight on him,” staff member Tina Carson told 9News.

“He thought it was gunshots he didn’t know it was a hammer, he thought it was a gun, and he still came in and tackled him to the ground.

Though the staff are too frightened to go back to work at the Bendigo jewellers, they are extremely thankful for Haby’s assistance and have put forward the builder’s name for a bravery award.

“Hopefully he’ll receive that because I think that’s what that award stands for,” Manager Cheryl Luvara told 9News.

The alleged offender has faced the Bendigo Magistrates court. He didn’t apply for bail, and has been remanded in custody until August.

“Just glad we could help,” Haby said.

“Glad no one got hurt, that was the main concern.”
