Football Australia pays tribute to young Socceroos fan killed after Federation Square screening

Football Australia has honoured 18-year-old Socceroos fan Cesare Liberatore following his tragic death in a car accident after he attended a public screening of Australia’s World Cup match against the United States at Melbourne’s Federation Square.

Ahead of Australia’s match against Paraguay, the governing body released a heartfelt message offering sympathy to Cesare’s family, friends and all who knew him.

“Football Australia would like to extend its sincere condolences to lifelong football fan Cesare Liberatore and his family after the 18-year-old tragically died in a car accident having just watched the Socceroos’ FIFA World Cup match against the United States at Federation Square in Melbourne.

“Rest in peace, Cesare.”

The tribute quickly drew an outpouring of emotion from supporters, many of whom shared condolences and expressed hope that the Socceroos could dedicate a win over Paraguay to the young fan’s memory.

“Heartbreaking news, let’s get this win today for him,” one supporter wrote.

Another fan responded: “Beautiful message and absolutely heartbreaking.”

A third shared: “May He Rest In Eternal Peace and sincerest condolences and deepest sympathies to all his family and loved ones and all of us as a Football family. Let’s get the win lads in memory of this great kid.”
