Sunglasses rescue goes horribly wrong as camper plunges into California vault toilet tank

A camping trip in California took a deeply unpleasant turn when a man accidentally fell into a vault toilet while trying to recover a pair of sunglasses, leaving him trapped in a sewage tank as emergency crews worked to rescue him.

The unusual incident happened Saturday at Camp Edison near Shaver Lake, in the Sierra Nevada foothills about 50 miles northeast of downtown Fresno, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to authorities, the man tried to reach for the sunglasses after they dropped into a waterless, non-flushing toilet. Instead, he lost his balance and fell into the chemical holding tank below.

Emergency responders, including Cal Fire crews, were called to the campground after someone reported that a person had fallen into the confined space.

The man was trapped for roughly 10 to 15 minutes before rescuers were able to get him out safely.

Officials said communication was initially complicated by a language barrier during the response.

Sgt. Chris Tullus told yourcentralvalley.com that, “via a Spanish translator, they advised that the subject had fallen into the chemical storage tank.”

First responders, campground employees and law enforcement officers worked together to pull the camper from the tank and help clean him up afterward.

While the ordeal was undeniably disgusting, authorities confirmed the man was not seriously injured.

He was treated on site and required what officials described as “a hosing down” before walking away on his own.

There was no immediate word on whether the sunglasses that sparked the disastrous dive were ever recovered.

A sheriff’s spokesperson told The Los Angeles Times they highly suspect the eyewear was permanently “lost to the vault” and left behind in the waste chemicals.

Camp Edison’s restroom facilities, however, have previously received mixed attention online.

A YouTube walkthrough posted more than a decade ago described the site as “very clean and well maintained,” noting it “does provide toiletries and electric lighting.”

Tripadvisor reviews of the broader campground also rate it four stars out of five, with one camper praising “sparkling clean” restrooms with “nice hot water,” while another complained they were “anything but pleasant.”
