Last week, gas prices across the state surged by 20 cents per gallon, rising from $2.92 to $3.12. However, over the weekend, the state average dropped by 7 cents per gallon.

TAMPA, Fla. — With Memorial Day weekend approaching, Florida’s gas prices are on a downward trend, according to a news release from the American Automobile Association (AAA).

Last week, gas prices in the state increased by 20 cents per gallon, climbing from $2.92 to $3.12. Following that, the state average decreased by 7 cents per gallon over the weekend.

The news comes as a record-breaking 2.6 million Floridians prepare to travel 50 miles or more for Memorial Day weekend, AAA said. About 2.3 million of those Floridians will reportedly take a road trip.

“With so many drivers fueling up, gas prices may fluctuate in the coming days,” AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins stated in the release. “However, even at their peak, prices should remain well below last year’s holiday rates.”

On Sunday, Florida gas prices averaged $3.05 per gallon, 46 cents less than the state average last year, which was $3.51 per gallon.

According to officials, the most expensive metro markets in Florida are:

  • West Palm Beach – Boca Raton ($3.22)
  • Naples ($3.14)
  • Ocala ($3.13)

Meanwhile, the least expensive metro markets are:

  • Crestview-Fort Walton Beach ($2.80)
  • Pensacola ($2.86)
  • Panama City ($2.79)

How can I save money on gas in Florida?

Here are some ways to save on gas, according to AAA:

  • Combine errands to limit driving time.
  • Drive conservatively. Avoid aggressive acceleration and speeding, which reduces fuel economy.
  • Remove excess weight in your vehicle. Every 100 pounds taken out of the vehicle improves fuel economy by 1 to 2%
  • Shop around for the best gas prices in your community by using the AAA mobile app.
  • Pay with cash. Some retailers charge more per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
