DSA comrades increase pressure on Mamdani to fire NYPD commissioner after ICE shooting

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Democratic Socialists of America allies are calling for NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to resign and demanding the city dismantle the department’s Strategic Response Group. Some of those activists, however, have notably left the mayor out of their calls for action.

Illapa Sairitupac, a DSA state Senate candidate, posted a graphic on X Friday reading, “Abolish ICE, disband the SRG, fire Tisch.” The message made no mention of Mamdani, a fellow socialist and the city’s mayor.

The criticism has also extended to the New York City Council. DSA members have targeted Public Safety Committee Chair Oswald Feliz and Council Speaker Julie Menin, accusing them of holding up legislation that would disband the Strategic Response Group.

Socialist Council Member Chi Osse, a Mamdani ally, accused Feliz of deliberately preventing the CURB Act from receiving a hearing. The bill would restrict the Strategic Response Group’s role in breaking up protests, and a committee hearing is a critical step in advancing legislation through the council.

“The chair of the public safety committee, Council Member Oswald Feliz, is blocking the bill from a hearing, and no, he’s not a Republican,” Osse said sarcastically in an Instagram video Monday.

“It’s long overdue that we, the people, get a hearing,” he added, saying the Mamdani administration should also have an opportunity to weigh in on the legislation.

Other left-wing activists have been more direct in their criticism of the mayor, with some DSA allies openly demanding that Mamdani be held responsible.

The New York City chapter of the DSA issued a statement Saturday calling on Mamdani to fire Tisch after a man was shot by federal law enforcement officers during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation Thursday.

“We demand that Mayor Zohran Mamdani fire NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and use every power available to him to drive ICE out of New York City,” the group said in the statement.

“We further demand that the mayor abolish the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group and Community Response Team,” the statement continued.

Andrew Easton, a socialist congressional candidate challenging Democratic incumbent Rep. Ritchie Torres in New York’s 15th District, said the “real responsibility” rests with Mamdani.

“Fire Tisch and disband the SRG, but the real responsibility lies with Mayor Zohran Mamdani. He must kick every ICE agent out of NYC,” Easton wrote on X Sunday.

“Mamdani was elected with the support of the immigrant rights movement and must be held accountable. He must fully enforce Executive Order 13,” Easton added.

A spokesperson for Mamdani did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
