Former MLB player's wife dies in Venezuela earthquakes

The wife of former MLB outfielder Gorkys Hernández died in the devastating pair of earthquakes that struck Venezuela this week, Hernández shared Saturday.

In an emotional Instagram tribute to Deisy Tovar de Hernández, he called her “the queen of my life” and described her as the most beautiful, loving and precious woman in the world.

Hernández wrote that Deisy was the person who always helped him find strength in difficult moments, adding that she would remain with him “at every hour and in every moment.”

“Fly high, my princess, my queen; may God hold you in His glory,” he wrote, asking her to guide him as he continues forward and supports their family. Hernández played in the majors from 2008 to 2018, with time in organizations including the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox.

He ended the message by saying he loved her and asking for strength to carry on the mission they shared. “You taught me to be strong through life’s challenges,” he wrote, honoring her as “my warrior, Deisy Maria Tovar De Hernandez.”

Deisy, 36, was among several relatives of La Guaira Delfines players who were at the Hotel Eduards as the team prepared to face the Aragua Tigres at the beachfront Estadio Forum de La Guaira in Macuto, La Guaira.

After the game was suspended, Hernández and his teammates hurried to the hotel to search for their loved ones following the back-to-back 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that shook Venezuela.

Images from the scene showed former Los Angeles Angels prospect Luis Viloria looking toward the hotel debris, while Hernández was seen seated near the hotel fence, staring down at his cellphone.

Hernández married Deisy in December 2025. Deisy leaves behind a daughter, Vittoria Vásquez, from a previous relationship.

On Friday night, Vásquez revealed on Instagram Stories that trapped victims were heard hollering to be pulled from the Hotel Eduards rubble.

“As of 4:00 p.m. today, screams can still be heard from the Hotel Eduard,” the message indicated. “There are people still alive inside. Help is needed to move the rubble – heavy machinery is required.”

Local sports broadcaster Raúl Zambrano announced on X on Saturday that rescue teams were still searching for the wife and daughter of former major leaguer and Delfines coach, Eliézer Alfonzo.
