New Iran plot to assassinate Trump as country mourns Supreme Leader

U.S. officials have reportedly been briefed on a fresh Iranian plan to assassinate President Donald Trump, based on intelligence gathered by Israel, as Trump declared that the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran is “over.”

Earlier this week, Trump described his adversaries as “crazy” and said “they want to take me out,” while also insisting that Tehran “want to make a deal badly.”

Specifics of the alleged plot have not been disclosed. However, Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, with the two leaders agreeing to maintain “coordination between the countries,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

Asked for comment, the White House directed The Daily Mail to remarks Trump made Wednesday at the NATO summit in Turkey.

“They want to take out the US leader — me. I’m on whatever list. I saw this morning I’m on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I’ve been a bit lucky, but maybe that doesn’t last very long,” Trump said.

He continued: “These are evil, sick people. And we have to root out that cancer. That cancer. You know what you do? You’ve got to cut out cancer early. And that’s the way I feel.”

The Daily Mail has also contacted Netanyahu’s office seeking comment.

Trump’s comments followed inflammatory rhetoric from hardline lawmakers in Tehran, who publicly urged missile strikes against his location at the summit. Earlier in the week, mourners at Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral reportedly announced a death bounty targeting Trump.

The President again brought up his demise during a press conference alongside Marco Rubio and his other top cabinet officials.

While discussing Iran’s leadership, installed after Khamenei was killed in the war, Trump said: ‘They’re gone now. They have another set of leaders. They may be gone.’

‘Who knows? And you know what, I may be gone too because I’m their number one target. It’s out all over the place. I’m the number one, because they’re scum.’

Trump’s comments come after he declared his ceasefire with Iran ‘over’ and unleashed fresh strikes on the regime after Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

During Khamenei’s funeral on Monday, footage from Tehran shows pro-regime demonstrators with posters featuring red crosshairs over Trump’s face, above the seven-word warning: ‘Sooner or later, your heads will roll.’

Other posters showed the faces of JD Vance and Pete Hegseth over a crosshair with the phrase: ‘There will be blood.’

Chants of ‘Death to America’ and ‘Death to Israel’ rang out across the capital as Khamenei’s coffin was borne through the streets of Tehran.

Iranians were also seen lighting US and British flags on fire while hurling rocks at pictures of Trump. An effigy of Trump being hanged was pictured near the front of the funeral procession.

Khamenei ruled Iran for nearly 37 years before dying in U.S. and Israeli airstrikes that started the war February 28.

He was laid to rest in his hometown of Mashhad early Friday after days of public mourning.

Khamenei is only the second ruler of the nation to be buried in the city. In 1747, Nader Shah was buried there after he was assassinated following nearly 11 years in power.

The funeral processions began Saturday, with authorities shutting down streets, airspace and daily life in Tehran and other cities, as throngs commemorated the man who led Iran with an iron fist for decades while confronting the West.

The regime’s desire to kill Trump goes back to his first term, following the 2020 drone strike the President ordered that killed Revolutionary Guard general Qasem Soleimani.

US intelligence repeatedly warned during his 2024 campaign that Iran was plotting to assassinate him as well as former officials from his first term in revenge for the strike.

Federal prosecutors charged a Revolutionary Guard operative with offering $300,000 to have Trump’s former national security advisor John Bolton murdered on American soil.

Pompeo and one-time Iran envoy Brian Hook were forced to live under round-the-clock government protection.

The President’s apparent musing about his death comes just days before the two-year anniversary of the Butler, Pennsylvania, assassination attempt that nearly took his life.

The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general released a report last week that found the Secret Service missed 102 radio calls flagging gunman Thomas Crooks on a nearby roof with a long gun and never warned the agents at Trump’s side to get him off the stage.

The would-be assassin was shot at the scene in July 2024.

The confusion and uncertainty in Trump’s mixed messaging and his approval of back-to-back military strikes leave major questions about what comes next in the conflict, just weeks after difficult diplomacy to reach even an initial deal between the longtime adversaries.

The whipsawing rhetoric could be a strategy to increase the pressure on Tehran to stop attacking ships transporting oil and natural gas in the Strait of Hormuz and bend to US demands on its nuclear program — something Trump has tried before.

Whether it is a negotiation tactic or a signal of an escalation in fighting, mediators are scrambling to save the interim deal and the actions risk further inflaming tensions — which could spell problems for Republicans in November’s midterm elections if gas prices stay high.

Trump warned Wednesday that a new round of US attacks was coming, even as he attempted to shrug off suggestions of a return to full-scale war.

Hours later, the military announced it was carrying out new attacks on Iran that were meant to ‘further degrade their ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.’

‘Anything that happens is going to happen very fast,’ Trump said earlier. ‘We’re not looking for a long time.’
