Mitch McConnell, 84, struggles to speak in Senate meeting

Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, was visibly struggling to speak during a Senate meeting on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.

McConnell returned to Capitol Hill on Monday after an absence of more than 90 days. During Wednesday’s Farm Bill markup, two colleagues appeared to guide him through the process, reminding him that it was time to vote and indicating which measure was before him.

The Kentucky Republican, who led Senate Republicans for nearly two decades, has faced a series of health challenges during the final term of his political career.

He fell on June 14 and was briefly hospitalized. McConnell then spent nearly three months recovering at his Washington, DC, home, largely out of public view.

In a post on X Monday, McConnell said he was “really looking forward to being back on the Senate floor and seeing … colleagues.”

“My recovery has been a long and often frustrating process, and the lingering effects of childhood polio haven’t made it any easier,” the former longtime Senate leader wrote. “I’m still not quite back to 100%, but I’ve assured Leader Thune that, as I continue with physical therapy on the advice of my doctors, I will do my best to be present for tough votes when our Conference needs me.”

McConnell closed the post by thanking fellow Kentuckians for their continued good wishes and saying he was pleased to resume more of his usual Senate duties on their behalf.

Capitol Police were seen outside McConnell’s home Monday, where security measures had been increased. He left the property ahead of the 5:30 p.m. vote series and arrived shortly before 6 p.m. Minutes later, he was on the Senate floor casting his ballot and conferring with colleagues from a wheelchair.

McConnell spoke briefly with reporters outside the Senate chamber Monday, but congressional rules prohibit recording in the hallway where he delivered his remarks. Wednesday’s committee session marked the first time his voice was widely heard since his return.

In the weeks following his hospitalization, McConnell spoke by phone with several congressional colleagues, telling them he was recovering and hoped to return to work soon.

His explanations, however, failed to satisfy lawmakers in either party.

As calls intensified for “proof of life,” McConnell’s office released a photograph of him and his wife at the hospital. The image included a newspaper dated July 12, although some people initially questioned whether the photograph had been generated using artificial intelligence.

McConnell remained out of sight for several more weeks before his office released a second photograph on July 27.

Weeks later, it was revealed that he was discharged from the hospital and would continue his recovery at home.

‘Senator McConnell continues his recovery from a fall at home in June,’ a comment from his doctor attached to the photograph said.

‘Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation.’

Another statement from his office revealed that he had also had a mild case of pneumonia.

This is a developing news story and will be updated.
