‘It’s becoming disjointed, it’s becoming like American football. It stops for four or five minutes.

‘It’s taken the soul of the game.

‘I would only keep VAR for is offside and the goalline.’

Arsenal released a statement on Sunday supporting manager Mikel Arteta after he slammed the refereeing standards in England following his side’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday.

The statement says the club is backing their manager after ‘yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors’.

It continues by suggesting that fans, players and managers ‘deserve better’ from the PGMOL.

Arteta was left fuming after the final whistle at St James’ Park as Anthony Gordon’s match-deciding goal was allowed to stand, while Bruno Guimaraes avoided punishment for a supposed elbow on Jorginho.

Gordon’s decisive strike went through three separate VAR checks before being allowed to stand, with referee Stuart Attwell and VAR official Andy Madley deeming that Joe WIllock had kept the ball in play, Joelinton had not fouled Gabriel and that the goalscorer was onside.

In Spain, Aspas showed his frustrations with VAR after throwing the official’s monitor on the floor during Celta Vigo’s match.

The incident took place in the final moments of their crucial LaLiga clash with Sevilla on Saturday, which ended up a 1-1 draw.

Celta Vigo thought they had the chance to snatch all three points after referee Alejandro Hernandez awarded them a penalty for an foul by Jesus Navas on Anastasios Douvikas.

However, after a consultation with VAR, the officials overturned the original decision and rescinded the yellow card handed out to Navas.
