LA forced to block 101 Freeway on-ramps with gates ahead of 'No King's' protests

In Los Angeles, transit workers have been compelled to set up robust metal gates on freeway ramps to deter disruptive demonstrators from storming the city’s hectic roads during the “No Kings” protests on Saturday.

Several gates were observed being installed by transit crews at the on- and off-ramps of the 101 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles. This area previously witnessed chaotic scenes in June when violent protesters blocked traffic during anti-ICE demonstrations.

The installation of these barriers by the California Department of Transportation serves as a “proactive safety measure” aimed at preventing protestors from obstructing freeway traffic, as confirmed by officials to CBS News.

Footage captured crews in hard hats erecting a gate near the intersection of the 101 Freeway and Los Angeles Street, right in the bustling downtown core.

“This specific area has previously experienced pedestrians encroaching onto the freeway during protest events, posing dangers to both themselves and drivers,” a spokesperson from the transportation department explained to CBS News. “The gates will be deployed as necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists alike, keeping them clear of swiftly moving traffic.”

The total number of gates either installed or planned for installation throughout the city remains uncertain, according to KTLA.

Another round of “No Kings’ protests are scheduled for Saturday across Southern California, including LA, Burbank and Long Beach.

The LA protests in June spiraled into chaos as rioters threw rocks, concrete and “commercial-grade” fireworks at officers.

The protest involving more than 20,000 people quickly descended into mayhem as agitators clashed with police and other agencies in a cloud of tear gas.
