Republicans turn on Trump's $5,000 promise as an expensive 'bribe'

President Donald Trump’s new campaign pledge to send voters $5,000 if Republicans capture Congress in November is drawing uneasy reactions from within his own party, with some conservatives openly comparing the proposal to a political “bribe.”

‘If Republicans win both the House and the Senate, because of our tremendous economic success, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States for $5,000,’ Trump declared Wednesday evening at a Republican rally in Dallas.

The president offered few specifics on how the plan would work, saying only that the payments would go to American citizens and would have to be spent inside the United States.

The surprise announcement stunned even some of Trump’s most loyal allies and supporters.

‘For the record, I am hugely in favor of winning the midterms, and love much about this admin, but am strongly against bread and circus bribes,’ Palantir co-founder and GOP donor Joe Lonsdale reacted.

A $5,000 payment to every citizen would far exceed the direct checks distributed by the federal government during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While estimates differ, the proposal could carry a price tag of roughly $1 trillion to $1.3 trillion — a sum critics warn would add heavily to the national debt, strain the federal budget and risk fueling additional inflation.

‘I would like to know how they would plan to pay for … back of envelope … well over $1 trillion,’ Texas Republican Congressman Chip Roy wrote on X.

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas told Politico the initiative would cost ‘a massive amount’ and he would prefer that there be restrictions on who could receive the money.

‘I don’t know about you all, but frankly I’m insulted by the notion that my vote this November could be bought for 5k,’ Republican Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky, a Trump critic, reacted on X.

‘Not to mention the inflation this would cause. All things considered, I cannot in good conscience accept a penny less than 10k!’

The latest payment promise is just one of many Trump has promised throughout his second term.

He promised Americans would receive a $5,000 ‘DOGE dividend,’ and a $2,000 ‘tariff dividend.’

Neither have been paid out and the administration has largely remained mum on the expensive awards. However, Trump did make good on his ‘warrior dividend’ promise, which paid out $1,776 to 1.4 million military officials in December 2025.

‘$5,000 for the peasants will be in the mail after the election only if you vote Republican, along with those DOGE and tariff money checks,’ former congresswoman and ex-Trump ally Marjorie Taylor Greene chided.

Though some lawmakers rejoiced at the Trump announcement.

‘I will get a bill ready so that we can get the Trump Dividend passed immediately after the November 3rd election … because Republicans (and America) will win!’ Republican Senator Bernie Moreno reacted.

Any new payment checks sent out at Trump’s command would need approval from Congress before moving forward.

Pressed on whether Republicans have the appetite to vote for such a promise, Senate Republican Leader John Thune equivocated when pressed by Fox News on Thursday morning.

‘That’s a good question,’ the Senate leader told Dana Perino. ‘We will cross that bridge when we come to it.’

But despite the outright pushback and apparent skepticism, Trump is undeterred in his quest to deliver rebates and dividends.

On Thursday morning, the president announced he would give $500 rebate checks to nearly 1 million Americans who the administration claims were overcharged through Obamacare.

‘Our administration is doing the right thing and giving the money back to the people who were wrongly ripped off,’ Trump shared in a pre-recorded video address from the Oval Office.
