Russia Suffers Record 54,400 Troop Casualties in October, Ukraine Says

Russia recorded more than 54,000 battlefield casualties in October, according to Ukraine, marking Moscow’s deadliest month since the full-scale invasion began as Ukrainian forces continued counterattacking along the front.

Ukraine’s General Staff said 54,400 Russian troops were killed, wounded or reported missing during the month—roughly 8,170 more casualties than in September.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the figure as an all-time monthly record in a Telegram post. He also pointed to the war’s highest reported single-day loss, saying Russia suffered 2,250 casualties on Oct. 21.

Since launching its full-scale invasion in 2022, Russia may have sustained between 1.4 million and 2.1 million total casualties, according to estimates cited by The Economist.

The publication estimates that between 374,000 and 770,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in combat. That represents a sharp rise from its May assessment, which placed the upper estimate for Russian battlefield deaths at 518,000.

The figures broadly match projections issued earlier this year by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, as well as estimates from the UK military.

According to CSIS, Russia’s military deaths alone exceed the combined number of Soviet and Russian fatalities recorded in all conflicts since World War II by more than nine times.

Analysts have linked the mounting losses to Russia’s “meat grinder” strategy, which relies on repeated infantry assaults to wear down Ukrainian defenses. The tactic has become even more costly in 2026 as Kyiv advances in several areas and deploys inexpensive hunter-killer drones with increasing effectiveness.

Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, said Ukrainian drone operators struck a Russian soldier approximately every two and a half minutes in October—equivalent to about 542 troops per day.

Zelensky said Ukraine reclaimed another 37 square miles during October, surpassing the 33 square miles Russia reportedly captured over the same period.

The territorial gains came during Operation Vivaldi, a phased Ukrainian counteroffensive designed to retake occupied land. Kyiv said the operation recovered 68 square miles in September.

“We are maintaining our positions, reclaiming territory and ensuring that every day of this war carries the highest possible cost for the aggressor,” Zelensky said. “If Russia wants to end these staggering losses, it only needs to choose a ceasefire and diplomacy.”
