Neighbor recalls hearing ‘fireworks noises’ as synagogue was attacked
In a startling incident on Thursday, a resident from the area near Temple Israel recounted a moment of confusion and concern when his wife mistook the sound of gunfire for fireworks. Speaking to WXYZ, Sheldon shared the unsettling experience that unfolded in their neighborhood.
Sheldon described how his wife was upstairs, busy with household chores, when she was startled by a series of sirens echoing through the area. Initially, she dismissed the noises as fireworks, but as the sounds persisted, she grew anxious. “She was like, ‘What is that?’ and she heard a couple of fireworks noises,” he recalled. Unsure whether the sounds were celebratory or something more sinister, she contacted Sheldon, prompting him to rush home immediately. “I have to go home,” he said, recounting his thoughts at the time, “and this is all that happened.”
Upon arriving home, Sheldon was met with a scene of heightened police activity. “There were so many cop cars, different cities and everything,” he noted, illustrating the magnitude of the response. Concern quickly spread among the community, with friends reaching out to ensure their safety. Sheldon mentioned two nearby houses where neighbors had reportedly sheltered children and teachers, though he was reassured by other residents who indicated that everyone was safe. “Hopefully that’s the case,” he added, reflecting the collective hope for a peaceful resolution.
