'Teacher of the Year' in South Carolina charged after allegedly trying to hit her baby's father with car

A South Carolina teacher who recently earned the prestigious “Teacher of the Year” title has been charged with serious offenses after allegedly attempting to run over her child’s father in a Walmart parking lot.

Sade Delesia Nacheyle Nelson, recognized in 2025 as the “Teacher of the Year” at St. John’s High School in Charleston, is accused of attacking the father of her child and his girlfriend during a custody handover on October 18, according to Summerville police, as reported by Live5News.

The 37-year-old Nelson is alleged to have physically assaulted the man and his girlfriend before trying to hit him with her vehicle.

Footage from surveillance cameras purportedly captures Nelson accelerating her car toward her child’s father, forcing him to leap aside to avoid being hit.

Nelson is now charged with third-degree assault and battery, engaging in domestic violence of a highly aggravated nature, and unlawfully endangering or harming a child, according to the incident report.

Police records show that the man told officers he opened the passenger door of Nelson’s car to pick up his son when she began punching him repeatedly, according to the Daily Mail.

He said he fell away from the car attempting to escape her punches.

Nelson claimed to police that the man attacked her and their son after opening the car door.

The Charleston County School District said Nelson has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
