Cal Men's Rowing marks 150 years of grit, glory, and tradition

OAKLAND, Calif. — This year marks the 150th anniversary of Cal Men’s Rowing, the oldest sport at the University of California, Berkeley.

“It’s a significant anniversary for our team,” expressed head coach Scott Frandsen. “The Boat Club began in 1875 and now, 150 years on, we celebrate a rich history of achievements and triumphs.”

This legacy of achievement encompasses three Olympic gold medals for the USA (1928, 1932, 1948) alongside 19 national championships, with the latest victory in 2023.

For Frandsen, who was a former rower for Cal and competed in three Olympics with the Canadian national team, the program’s strength lies in its community. “Our older alumni still meet up, even after 65 or 70 years, to share stories,” Frandsen remarked. “It’s in your blood and becomes a lifelong passion.”

Rower Michael Chandler, who also serves as the financial and fundraising director for Friends of Cal Crew, feels the legacy of excellence fuels him and his team. “We’re fortunate to represent 150 years of history every time we compete. When everything aligns, it’s truly a special experience.”

Frandsen also acknowledged Cal alumnus T. Gary Rogers and his family for their fundraising contributions. The T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center has replaced the century-old Ky Ebright Boathouse. “Gary Rogers’ support has given us the best collegiate program globally,” Frandsen noted.

The Friends of Cal Crew organized a weekend of events in October to support the team’s ongoing success. This three-day gathering at the T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center brought alumni, current athletes, and supporters together for a reunion, gala, and fundraiser benefiting the Rogers Cal Crew Forever Fund.
