A Florida mother has been barred from contacting her son after the youngster alerted police, claiming she had left him unattended to visit a Walmart.

Britley Louis, 23, was taken into custody on March 8 following an incident reported by the North Miami Beach Police Department. Her 5-year-old son reportedly approached officers in the area, saying he was left alone the previous evening. Bodycam footage released to Law&Crime reveals the boy, whose identity remains confidential, informing officers that his mother had gone to Walmart. He also mentioned, “She didn’t tell me what time she would come [home].”

When another officer inquired if the boy lived nearby, he affirmed, “Mmhmm, by myself.” He elaborated, explaining that he was alone because “my mommy left me.”

The arrest affidavit, as reviewed by Law&Crime, described the boy outside in a long-sleeved T-shirt, without pants or shoes. He sought assistance from the officers and directed them to his residence. Attempts by the police to reach anyone inside the home went unanswered.

Upon discovering an unlocked door through which the child had exited, officers entered the home, encountering “signs of hoarding,” with the space littered in filth, “rotten food residue everywhere,” and cobwebs throughout. The refrigerator emitted an overpowering odor, according to police reports.

Authorities eventually identified Louis as the child’s mother, although she failed to respond to multiple calls from investigators. The affidavit notes that Louis informed a Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) agent that a friend was supposed to pick up her son. However, the friend expressed discomfort with assuming custody, leading to the boy being placed under DCF care.

As Louis was leaving her home the following day, police placed her under arrest.

Louis was charged with child neglect and unlawful desertion of a child. She was released from jail and ordered not to have any contact with her son. Her next court date is scheduled for April 7.
