Adam Scott recalls eerie real-life moment as horror film "Hokum" hits theaters

In Los Angeles, the term “Hokum” often evokes thoughts of absurdity or exaggeration, yet the new film titled “Hokum,” featuring Adam Scott, takes a different path by delving deep into the realm of fear.

Adam Scott steps into the shoes of Ohm Bauman, a writer who travels to a remote inn in Ireland with the somber task of spreading his parents’ ashes. However, he soon uncovers that the inn harbors a chilling secret.

While Scott is typically recognized for his performances within ensemble casts, this role posed the unique challenge of predominantly carrying the narrative on his own.

“After a few weeks into filming, Damian approached me with the schedule and said, ‘We have about three weeks of just you in a room.’ It was a bit intimidating,” Scott shared with On The Red Carpet.

The film is directed by Damian McCarthy, an Irish filmmaker renowned for crafting spine-tingling tales like “Caveat” and “Oddity.” McCarthy aims to keep viewers on their toes with unexpected twists.

“Audiences are familiar with horror tropes, so they’re often anticipating the next scare,” McCarthy explained. “My challenge is to subvert their expectations, making them think, ‘I bet it’s happening now,’ and then surprising them with, ‘No, it’s actually happening now,’ catching them off guard.”

When it comes to real-life paranormal encounters, each recalls only a partial experience, but nothing truly definitive.

“You know I’ve got a bad vibe in some places, but yeah, nothing out and out that would be super spooky,” McCarthy said.

“There’s only one experience that I had where I walked into a house, I was supposed to be renting… but to… There was something there that, whether it was completely in my imagination or a vibe, whatever, I had to get out of there and not come back, so I promptly went and found a hotel room,” Scott added.

“Hokum” is in theaters now.
