Although the TikTok divest-or-ban legislation has been in effect since January, the app has only halted its service in the US for a single day. Now, according to The Information, an agreement for a sale that complies with the law’s requirements is nearly finalized, which will introduce a new, separate version of the app.
Any deal, however, would need approval from the Chinese government, which is also still wrangling with the Trump administration over tariffs.
Earlier today, the Wall Street Journal noted that the General Services Administration announced Oracle has struck a new deal with the federal government. This deal is described as the first of its kind, offering the entire government a substantial discount on cloud infrastructure, providing a 75 percent reduction on licensed software.
It has been reported that TikTok’s team is developing a new version of the app — internally referred to as M2, compared to the current app’s M designation — which is set to be available in app stores on September 5th. Last month, Trump issued a third legally controversial extension of the deadline to ban TikTok from US app stores, now set to expire in mid-September. According to an unnamed source cited by The Information, with the current timeline, the original TikTok app will be removed from app stores as the new version launches and will cease to function entirely by March 2026.
