LOS ANGELES — A beloved classic reaches a significant milestone as “Waiting to Exhale,” a hallmark of 20th Century Studios, marks its 30th anniversary.
The film, starring iconic talents Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Lela Rochon, and the late Whitney Houston, tells the poignant story of four friends as they navigate the complexities of relationships, careers, and family life.
The leading ladies recently reunited to reflect on the film’s enduring legacy in an interview with On The Red Carpet, taking a moment to pay tribute to their late co-star, Whitney Houston.
“Even 30 years later, we feel Whitney’s presence with us as an angel on our shoulders,” Bassett shared. “Though she’s no longer here in person, her spirit remains a profound part of us.”
Rochon added, “We were truly blessed to share those moments with her. It’s amazing when young people express awe, saying, ‘Wow, you knew Whitney Houston?’ Yes, we did, and it was absolutely magical.”
Rochon explains, “We’re so blessed we had that time with her. And to get to know her and hear young people say, ‘Oh my, God. You knew Whitney Houston?’ Yeah, we did! And it was magical.”
Since its release in 1995, the film has developed a lasting legacy.
“‘Waiting to Exhale’ was all kinds of love,” says Devine. “It helps you to do what it says. It helps you to exhale and to enjoy what love and friendship is about.”
Bassett reflects on the new audience the film has found, three decades since its release. “I’m thrilled that this generation is enthralled and is taking to our little movie from 30 years ago”
“It’s one of the proudest things I’ve ever done in my life,” Rochon says. “It’s everlasting. It will outlive us.”
As a part of the celebration, Disney Concerts brought the film to life for an audience in New York, where stars including Andra Day, Tamar Braxton and Deborah Cox, performed tracks from the memorable soundtrack in front of a live audience.
“Waiting to Exhale” is streaming on Hulu.
