The Essex Files: They Went to the Moon — Their Example Should Stay With Us

Apollo Astronauts’ Moonshot Courage Still Lights the Way

Reid Wiseman and Victor Glover are moving on from active astronaut duty, but their legacy extends well beyond a successful mission and a list of formal accolades. Their journey around the Moon aboard Artemis II served as a powerful reminder that the United States can still take on hard things, shoulder genuine risk, and commit itself to goals that rise above the churn of day-to-day politics.

At a time when public life is often marked by cultural pessimism and bureaucratic inertia, NASA’s Artemis program remains a striking symbol of American ambition. It is costly, complex, and unavoidably gradual. It demands that engineers confront physical reality with precision, discipline, and competence — not slogans, political fashion, or ideological pressure.

A mission of this magnitude also calls for leaders willing to make difficult judgments without perfect information. Just as importantly, it requires a level of national resolve that can feel increasingly scarce in a society drawn to instant rewards and wary of almost any risk.

Space exploration is not a distraction from America’s challenges at home. It is, in many ways, one of the clearest expressions of the country’s traditional instinct to meet challenges directly. A nation capable of building spacecraft to carry people around the Moon is also capable of restoring its manufacturing strength, preparing a new generation of elite engineers, and protecting the scientific advantage that underwrites its security, prosperity, and freedom.

Glover’s next move is particularly revealing. The former Navy test pilot and NASA astronaut has accepted a leadership role at his alma mater, California Polytechnic State University, where he will help shape young minds while also placing renewed emphasis on his life as a husband and father to four daughters.

That decision is not a step back from service. It is a clear statement about enduring American priorities. National strength begins in homes, families, and classrooms long before it is tested on a launchpad. Public accomplishment matters, but it should never eclipse private responsibility or faith in the institutions that hold society together. A man can help carry a nation’s hopes beyond the Moon and still understand that his most important calling may be found at his own dinner table.

Wiseman’s story carries a similar weight. A retired Navy captain, former International Space Station resident, and former chief astronaut, he brought both exceptional leadership and deep personal loss to the mission. When the Artemis II crew sought permission to name a lunar crater after his late wife, Carroll, who lost her battle with cancer in 2020, they captured something profound about the human spirit. Even our boldest technological leaps do not erase our deepest human attachments and faith — they glorify them.

Americans must resist the temptation to treat spaceflight as just another government program or an expensive television spectacle. The practical benefits of technological dominance matter, and so does national prestige on the world stage. But the deeper value is cultural. A country that stops reaching upward eventually lowers its expectations everywhere else, settling for mediocrity over merit.

Wiseman and Glover showed discipline, competence, and courage in a field where mistakes are unforgiving. They proved that serious institutions, when focused strictly on excellence and accountability rather than social engineering, can still achieve extraordinary results.

The lesson for the conservative movement and the country at large is clear: America must continue to reward merit, defend the traditional structures that cultivate character, and teach our youth that difficult things are still worth doing. The Moon remains distant, but an exceptional American future doesn’t have to be.
