Brian Walshe, a 50-year-old previously convicted of fraud, made headlines by altering his plea on two lesser charges linked to the alleged murder of his wife, Ana, in their Boston suburban residence, purportedly following his discovery of her extramarital affair. This change came just before jury selection was due to commence for his murder trial on Tuesday morning.

Walshe confessed to the second and third charges in his indictment, acknowledging he had misled police officers and unlawfully disposed of a human body.

During the prosecution’s presentation, Walshe’s defense attorney clarified that while Walshe accepted responsibility for these lesser offenses, he maintained his innocence concerning the murder charge.

Walshe’s legal representative emphasized that he did not admit to the act of murder and rejected accusations of disposing of her remains in a dumpster or involvement in their incineration.

Tensions rose briefly when prosecutors challenged Walshe’s claim of being married while he was under oath, leading to a moment of dispute in the courtroom.

After a sidebar meeting with the judge, the defense said Walshe recognized that legally, he was no longer married after the death of his wife.

The judge put off sentencing, saying she needed to give time for the victim’s family to prepare their impact statements.

Prosecutors said that the plea was not negotiated, and it appeared that the trial would still move forward on the top charge of murder.
