A man accused of a grave crime that shocked Chicago has once again appeared in court. This case involves the tragic death of Chicago Police Officer John Bartholomew and the injury of his partner, an incident that left the community reeling.
On Wednesday, Alphonso Talley faced formal indictment on several serious felony charges including murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery, as the legal process continues to unfold.

The incident in question occurred on April 25 at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, located on North California Avenue in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago. It was a day that began with violence and ended in tragedy.
During the court proceedings, Talley’s public defender raised objections to a prosecution request for a DNA sample. However, the judge ruled against the objection, allowing the sample to be collected.
Details of the events leading up to the tragic shooting were recounted by the prosecution. It all began around 8 a.m. on April 25 when Talley allegedly carried out an armed robbery at a Family Dollar store in Albany Park, where he reportedly assaulted an employee. The robbery included cash embedded with GPS technology, enabling Chicago police to trace and apprehend Talley soon after.
Following his arrest, Talley claimed to have ingested drugs, prompting officers to escort him to the nearby Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital for medical evaluation. As preparations for a CT scan were underway, Talley, despite being stripped of his clothes, managed to keep himself covered with a blanket, setting the stage for the subsequent tragic events.
As soon as one of the officers uncuffed him, prosecutors say, Talley reached under the blanket and shot one officer in the head. He then turned and shot the second officer in the face before shooting out a hospital window to escape.
Prosecutors never said how Talley got the 10 mm handgun into the hospital. Officials with Endeavor Health say security wanded him as he entered the hospital and that nothing was detected.
He was eventually found a short time later under porch nearby. Cellphone video showed the moment Talley was arrested on Carmen Avenue, not long after he allegedly ran out of the hospital without any clothes on.
Friends, family and first responders gathered earlier this month for funeral services to remember the 38-year-old Chicago police officer killed in a North Side hospital shooting.
The officer that was shot and critically wounded in the shooting was moved to a rehabilitation facility last week, his family said.
Officer Nelson Crespo, 57, was still in the intensive care unit earlier last week, but his sister, Nancy, said he was being transferred Thursday.
Talley is due back in court again June 3.
