In a startling turn of events, a Columbia County Detention Center employee has been arrested following allegations of smuggling drugs into the jail, with some of the illicit substances reportedly stashed in his personal lunchbox.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) confirmed that on Friday, October 10, William McGhin, a 47-year-old detention officer, was taken into custody. This came after an investigation uncovered evidence that he was bringing narcotics into the facility and distributing them to inmates.

The investigation began after detectives were tipped off on Thursday, October 9, about McGhin’s suspicious activities. Evidence quickly mounted when a K-9 unit detected drugs near McGhin’s vehicle parked at the jail. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed two substances, one hidden in his lunchbox, which tested positive for methamphetamine.

Following these discoveries, McGhin was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and conspiracy to introduce contraband into a detention facility. He was promptly terminated from his position, the CCSO confirmed.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office released a statement regarding the case, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations and the swift actions taken to address them.

CCSO provided the following statement:

“While we are disappointed in this individual’s actions, we are committed to holding ourselves accountable. In doing so, we strive to maintain a secure and safe environment for all of our employees and those within our care and custody at the detention facility. This former employee’s actions do not reflect the values of this agency, and the overwhelming majority of our employees work each day to uphold the utmost integrity while serving our community. We will continue to work diligently to maintain a trusting relationship with those we have the privilege to serve.”
