CHICAGO (WLS) — A 33-year-old man from Gary is facing a murder charge in connection with the deadly shooting of an Amazon facility employee in Matteson earlier this week, police announced Thursday.
Matteson police identified the suspect as Devonta D. Hodge and said he met with detectives Tuesday afternoon before being taken into custody.
Hodge is scheduled to make a court appearance Thursday.
Officers were called around 10:54 p.m. Sunday to the Amazon facility at 7001 Vollmer Road after receiving a report of gunfire.
When police arrived, they found an Amazon worker suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The employee was transported to Olympia Fields Hospital, commonly known as St. James Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
Investigators said witness accounts and surveillance video indicate the victim and another employee got into an argument with the suspect, who was working as a food delivery driver, in the parking lot. The dispute then escalated into a physical fight.
Police said the delivery driver then opened fire, striking the Amazon employee several times.
“From that altercation, three to four shots were fired; the employee died,” Matteson spokesperson Sean Howard said.
The victim has been identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as 26-year-old Dylan Perkins of Glenwood.
Police put the massive Amazon facility on lockdown after the shooting.
An Amazon spokesperson said in a statement, “We’re saddened by this senseless act of violence and are focused on supporting our employees and the victim’s family during this difficult time. We’re working with the Matteson Police Department in their active investigation.”
Amazon said the employee was a third-party vendor.
There have been violent incidents at the Amazon location in the past.
In 2024, a woman suffered a graze wound after shots were fired apparently in retaliation for a fight the night before.
“Our good partner Amazon, they have a wonderful security and professional operation there. We’re working in collaboration to insure we can find out how this happened,” Howard said.
Matteson police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force said there is no threat to the public.
