The country is still in shock following Sunday’s brutal incident in Boulder, Colorado, where elderly Jewish individuals were attacked while advocating for the return of the Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, originally from Egypt, faces charges of attempted murder and hate crimes related to the assault. The rise of antisemitism in the United States should be a significant concern for every citizen. One of the victims of the attack on Sunday is left pondering a question that every sane and rational American should consider: “What is happening in our nation?”

The individual who posed this question is Barbara Steinmetz, aged 88. She attended the event and experienced minor injuries. Few have more justification to question the state of society than Barbara Steinmetz. During an interview with NBC News a few days after the assault, she remarked, “We’re Americans, we should aspire to better.” Rabbi Marc Soloway leads the Congregation Bonai Shalom, which Steinmetz belongs to. He reflected on how someone who survived the genocide of six million Jews is now facing such enmity within her own country.
