Heavy I-95 Northbound traffic near SR 206 after fiery crash involving semi-truck

Sunday afternoon saw the closure of I-95 near State Road 206 after a semi-truck transporting cabbage collided, flipped over, and burst into flames.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — A dramatic scene unfolded when the northbound lanes of I-95 were sealed off temporarily. A semi-truck crash resulted in a fiery blaze that necessitated this closure.

Traffic in the northbound direction, near mile marker 307 just above State Road 206, resumed its flow at a crawl shortly before 5 p.m.

A robust response followed the incident, with firefighters, deputies, numerous ambulances, and a helicopter arriving on the scene post-3:30 p.m., leading to significant traffic congestion both ways. Traffic cameras captured footage of the semi-truck ablaze, blocking several lanes.

According to St. Johns County Fire Rescue, the incident involved a collision between two vehicles. A severely damaged blue sedan was spotted on the highway’s left shoulder, trailing the overturned semi-truck.

The semi-truck driver sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital, as stated by Chris Naff, a spokesperson for St. Johns County Fire Rescue.

The semi-truck was hauling cabbages, which spilled out onto the road after the collision. Diesel fuel also leaked onto the roadway, and a hazmat team was called out to clean up, Naff said.

Some northbound lanes could remain closed for hours as crews work to clean up the debris and fuel.
