The 56-year-old from Yulee was killed when the plane crashed in a wooded area near Blackrock Road.

YULEE, Fla. — A man was killed Saturday morning in a plane crash in Yulee, Florida Highway Patrol confirms.

The man was identified by FHP as a 56-year-old who was from Yulee. He was the pilot and was the only person on board, the FAA said. 

A report from FHP indicates that a Piper single-engine aircraft was flying near the Yulee Airport, specifically in the 96060 block of Blackrock Road, on Saturday at 9:35 a.m. According to the FAA, the plane was en route from Clearwater Air Park to Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport. 

The plane crashed in a small wooded area nearby, “for unknown reasons.” The FAA says the time of the crash was about 9:40 a.m.

Witnesses shared photos with First Coast News showing massive flames coming from the crash site.

The man was the only confirmed fatality.

The NTSB and FAA are currently on site conducting an investigation. The NTSB provided a statement to First Coast News, explaining that their investigator is documenting the scene, examining the aircraft, and gathering all relevant records, including air traffic communications, radar data, and weather reports. They are also attempting to contact any witnesses. 

The NTSB plans to continue their investigation into Sunday, after which the airplane will be transported to a secure location for further examination.

All roads that were closed because of the crash are now open.
