Ex-MIT professor wins $6M after sex claims wrecked career, accuser joked about ‘#hetoo’

A Massachusetts jury has awarded former MIT biologist Dr. David Sabatini $6 million in a defamation case stemming from sexual misconduct allegations, setting up a likely round of cross-appeals as both sides prepare to take the dispute before a higher court.

Dr. Kristin Knouse, the former colleague whose accusations effectively ended Sabatini’s career in American academia, is contesting the October verdict. Her appeal has intensified a broader legal debate over how workplace misconduct allegations are handled and how much authority campus disciplinary panels should have.

Knouse’s attorney, Ellen Zucker, said the $6 million award could discourage women from reporting misconduct. In her view, the verdict reflects a culture that remains unwilling to believe women who speak out against influential men.

“When someone can be sued simply for speaking up, people become less willing to participate in an investigation,” Zucker told News Outlet. “The prospect of being sued for coming forward sharply reduces the likelihood that anyone will report misconduct.”

Sabatini’s attorneys strongly disputed that argument. His lawyer, Lisa G. Arrowood, told News Outlet that the verdict should not deter legitimate victims from reporting abuse or harassment.

“The jury’s decision should have no effect on women who have genuinely experienced harassment or abuse and choose to report it,” Arrowood said.

“Based on contemporaneous documents written by Dr. Knouse, the jury determined that no harassment occurred and that her allegations of harassment and rape were false and defamatory. The verdict therefore has no relevance to people who report misconduct truthfully.”

Arrowood also said she expects the $6 million judgment to survive the appeal.

“Appealing is her right,” Arrowood said. “But the judge handled this case carefully and often ruled in her favor on close legal questions. We believe the appeal will ultimately fail.”

Zucker maintained that the verdicts should be overturned, arguing that imposing financial penalties on accusers could undermine future institutional investigations.

“We do not believe these verdicts will stand,” Zucker said. “Our client came to court and honestly described her experiences with Sabatini, as did several other women. Investigators also found multiple violations of institutional policy.”

The appeals process is expected to revisit the events that ultimately led to the litigation.

A disputed relationship

Knouse and Sabatini first met in 2012, when Knouse was pursuing a doctoral degree through the Harvard-MIT M.D./Ph.D. program and Sabatini sat on her thesis committee. Court records say they began a relationship in 2018, after Knouse became a Whitehead Fellow.

Sabatini described the relationship as consensual. Knouse said it involved coercion and created an improper workplace environment. A Whitehead investigation in 2021 concluded that Sabatini had violated the institute’s policy governing workplace relationships.

Messages introduced at trial showed Knouse writing that she would “fixate on how I’m being held as a backup and competed against other women,” according to Boston 25 News.

In a message about visiting Sabatini’s hotel room during a work retreat, she wrote, “In hindsight, it was quite aggressive, #hetoo,” the outlet reported.

Knouse also organized what she called “Covert Operation Dethrone,” a campaign directed at Sabatini, Boston 25 reported. In one message, she joked about purchasing a “Lambo” if she secured a settlement.

“Dr. Sabatini and his legal team are not criticizing the #MeToo movement or women’s right to report harassment,” Arrowood added. “This case is different because the jury found that Dr. Knouse’s allegations were fabricated and intended to damage Dr. Sabatini.”

Following Knouse’s accusations, MIT removed Sabatini from his tenured position. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or HHMI, terminated him, and the Whitehead Institute also dismissed him.

Arrowood said Sabatini’s team would pursue its own appeal, seeking to reverse an earlier ruling that removed the Whitehead Institute from the defamation case.

MIT and HHMI were not named as defendants in the defamation lawsuit.

MIT declined to comment and referred News Outlet to a 2022 letter to staff. In that letter, issued when Sabatini resigned, the university said he had “behaved in ways incompatible with the responsibilities of faculty membership.”

HHMI did not answer a request for comment.

Questions over Title IX proceedings

The institutions based their decisions to remove Sabatini on internal Title IX investigations. Those proceedings concluded that he had violated policy by maintaining an undisclosed romantic relationship with a junior researcher.

According to the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, campus tribunals generally operate under a lower standard of proof and often do not permit the accused to cross-examine the person making the allegation.

Arrowood argued that the institutions acted before the evidence could be fully examined in a civil courtroom.

“Universities should take this verdict as a warning that they must gather and evaluate all relevant facts and documents from both sides before deciding to dismiss someone,” she said.

“In this case, investigators and the Whitehead Institute allowed one party and her attorneys to determine what evidence they received and what information could be presented to Dr. Sabatini. We believe the outcome would have been different if the institution and investigators had seen the complete record.”

When the dispute reached Suffolk County Superior Court, jurors rejected Knouse’s counterclaims of harassment and ordered her to pay Sabatini millions of dollars for defamation.

Although Sabatini prevailed in court, the prolonged controversy dismantled his U.S. research operation. Billionaire activist Bill Ackman later financed a new laboratory for him in Prague, where Sabatini continues his cancer research.

“I lost everything. There was nothing left of my ordinary life,” Sabatini previously told Boston 25 News. “I had dreamed about this moment for years, while often wondering whether I would survive financially, emotionally or physically.”

The case now heads to the Massachusetts appellate courts, with the formal briefing schedule yet to be announced.
