Florida deputy drags 'unresponsive' beachgoer from ocean in dramatic rescue

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office in Florida has released dramatic footage capturing the rescue of a woman from the ocean at New Smyrna Beach last Saturday. This heart-stopping event unfolded as an officer, equipped with a body camera, rushed into the shallow waters to save the unresponsive swimmer.

The video reveals the officer’s determined efforts to pull the woman from the water, with another individual soon joining in to assist in moving her to safety. The quick response was a testament to the officers’ training and dedication.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, the incident began at 10:15 a.m. when deputies were alerted to a swimmer in distress. Deputy Gourley swiftly located the woman, who was floating face down, and dragged her to the shore. The 68-year-old was unresponsive, without a pulse, prompting Deputies Gourley and Manhart to initiate CPR, successfully reviving her.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office shared the gripping footage on their Facebook page, highlighting the urgency and coordination of the rescue operation.

Following the deputies’ successful resuscitation efforts, Beach Safety personnel arrived on the scene to continue life-saving measures. The woman was subsequently transported to the hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.

The sheriff’s office’s social media post indicated that the deputies involved in the incident will be awarded.

“This serves as a powerful reminder that alert beachgoers, like those who spotted the woman and quickly alerted deputies, can make all the difference. Life-saving awards are forthcoming for the deputies involved for their heroic actions,” the post concluded.
