A small detail on Lindsay Clancy’s wheelchair drew unexpected attention this week, after sharp-eyed observers spotted what appeared to be a playful reference to her attorney.
In a photo taken Wednesday, as jurors continued deliberating in the Massachusetts mother of three’s murder trial, a pink sticker reading “#sidebah” could be seen on a drink holder attached to Clancy’s wheelchair, which also held a Diet Coke.
The phrase on the sticker quickly became a talking point on social media, with many interpreting it as a nod to defense lawyer Kevin Reddington’s Boston-accented pronunciation of the word “sidebar.”
Reddington’s distinctive Boston inflection was on display Thursday when he discussed a sidebar connected to a reported issue involving a juror who allegedly “refused” to apply the legal definition of “reasonable doubt” while weighing a verdict.
The outspoken criminal defense attorney, who has been seen holding Clancy’s hand during some of the trial’s most difficult moments, has become a celebrated figure among a number of supporters of the postpartum mother.
It is not known whether Clancy put the sticker on the wheelchair herself, but the seemingly lighthearted remark left some social media users baffled after following the emotionally heavy six-week trial.
“#LindsayClancy has the audacity to put a “joke” sticker “SideBah” on her drink holder?!?!!! Does she think that’s all a joke?!” one user wrote on X.
“The kids are in the ground and she thinks this is a damn joke ?? Tell me that’s not who she is,” another user posted.
Clancy has been on trial for murdering her kids, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, who was 8 months old, with exercise bands in their Duxbury, Mass., home.
The former labor and delivery nurse then slit her wrists and throat and threw herself from the second story of the home, leaving her partially paralyzed.
Clancy claims she should be found not criminally responsible for the murders, arguing she was in the throes of severe postpartum psychosis at the time.
The 12-person jury, of nine women and three men, has been deliberating Clancy’s verdict for close to 40 hours over six days.
The judge was not swayed by Reddington’s impassioned plea to dismiss the one stubborn juror on Thursday, so the jury will return to deliberate on Friday.
