In-N-Out Shooting: Police Release Surveillance Video of Chaotic Scene

Twin Falls police said Friday they have not identified a motive behind the deadly mass shooting at an In-N-Out Burger in Idaho, as officials released unsettling surveillance footage capturing the panic and violence inside the restaurant.

Authorities said 24-year-old Chad Williams allegedly opened fire at the In-N-Out on Aug. 1, killing three people and injuring seven others.

During a news conference, Twin Falls police shared dramatic video from the scene, showing frightened employees dropping to the floor, taking cover and trying to protect one another as the shooting unfolded.

According to police, the footage shows the attack beginning when the gunman pulled up to the drive-thru payment window and fatally shot the first victim, In-N-Out employee Ashley Garibay.

Investigators said the gunman then parked his vehicle and shot another victim who was sitting in his own car.

Later in the video, police said, the gunman can be seen looking through the payment window, where employees were attempting to render aid to Garibay.

Police said the footage then shows him firing into the payment window. When his handgun jammed, authorities said, he returned to his car and retrieved a rifle.

The surveillance video also captured the turmoil inside the restaurant, where an off-duty trooper searched for the gunman while helping guide customers and employees toward an exit, police said.

The gunman is then seen on video running back to the drive-thru with the rifle and later firing at customers, according to police.

Later on, video captured a Good Samaritan with a handgun engaging the suspect in the parking lot as the gunman continued to fire, police said.

The off-duty officer and the Good Samaritan both confronted the suspect, which police said helped stop the shooting.

Williams — who police believe acted alone — died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.

The slain victims were identified by police as Garibay, 23; Dale Schultz, 66; and Christopher Claunch, 59.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said the first officer was on the scene within three minutes of the call, but it took about 90 minutes “to determine there was only one shooter involved.”

“During those 90 minutes, officers received multiple reports of possible active shooters in different locations. There were reports of suspects headed toward the mall, which required officers to divert their attention and resources to respond there,” Hicks said.
