Legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell becomes US citizen

Joni Mitchell is bringing fresh meaning to her classic song “Both Sides, Now” after becoming a United States citizen.

In a social media post Tuesday, Mitchell shared a photo of herself smiling in front of a U.S. Department of Homeland Security flag and an American flag. “A journey that began 62 years ago,” she wrote in the caption.

The legendary singer-songwriter also posted video from the ceremony. In the clip, an announcer introduces her as “Joni Mitchell, Canada,” prompting applause from the audience as she rises from her seat.

ABC News has contacted a representative for Mitchell seeking additional comment.

Mitchell was born Nov. 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta. Her family moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, when she was 9, and the singer has long described Saskatoon as her hometown, according to a biography published on her website.

She moved to the United States in 1965 with folk singer Chuck Mitchell. The following year, she performed a short set at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island.

Mitchell began pursuing a solo career in 1967 and released her debut album, “Song to a Seagull,” in 1968. She has since put out 18 studio albums, nearly all of which were recorded and produced in the United States.

Throughout the years, Mitchell has spoken publicly about not being a U.S. citizen.

During the 2024 concert known as Joni Jam at the Hollywood Bowl, her first headlining performance in Los Angeles in 24 years, Mitchell encouraged the crowd to “get out and vote,” according to the New Musical Express.

“This is an important one,” she said. “I wish I could vote — I’m Canadian. One of those lousy immigrants.”
