In a recent appearance on the “Today” show, Karen Read discussed her life following her acquittal in the high-profile case involving the death of her former boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe. She revealed that this newfound freedom from legal turmoil has come with unexpected public support, including complimentary meals when dining out.
During the interview, co-host Craig Melvin posed a challenging question, pointing out that many people might still hold suspicions about her involvement, despite the jury’s decision. “You have to know that when you walk down the street, there are lots of people who look at Karen Read and think, ‘Oh, there’s that woman who got away with killing her ex-boyfriend who’s a cop,’” Melvin remarked. “How do you go through life knowing that there are lots of people who, despite what the jury said, still think you got away with it?”
Addressing these concerns, Read expressed that her experiences have largely been positive. “I haven’t encountered many who harbor those suspicions,” she said. “Everywhere I go—whether it’s the grocery store, a restaurant, or Newbury Street in Boston—people have been supportive. I often receive discounts or even free meals. My parents are also warmly assisted when shopping.”
Outside the Norfolk County Superior Court in Dedham, Massachusetts, on June 18, 2025, Read had left as a free woman after being exonerated of charges related to Officer O’Keefe’s death. This verdict appears to have brought her a significant measure of public empathy, as highlighted by her experiences of kindness and generosity from those she encounters daily.
