Karen Read’s legal team has submitted a request to modify the verdict form in her retrial concerning the murder charges, as the jurors reconvened at the courthouse in Dedham, Massachusetts for their first comprehensive day of deliberations regarding the death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe.
David Yannetti, one of her lawyers, informed the court on Friday after the jurors started deliberations, expressing that he intended the suggested revisions to reduce confusion after the jury could not reach a decision in Read’s initial trial last year. This indecision led to a retrial, which started on April 22.
The testimony stage spanned over 30 days, leading up to the closing arguments. Judge Beverly Cannone spent approximately an hour delivering the jury instructions prior to the jurors beginning their deliberations at around 2:40 p.m. on Friday.
She is accused of second-degree murder, drunken driving manslaughter and leaving the scene of a deadly accident.
Read could face up to life in prison if convicted of the top charge.
