Residents wake up screaming as cops race to rescue them from late-night apartment blaze: video

Residents of a Utah apartment complex were jolted awake in the early hours of June 7 as St. George police officers rushed door to door warning that the building was on fire, according to body camera footage obtained by News Agency.

In one clip, an officer breaks through the door of a sleeping family’s apartment and urgently tells them, “Hey, you guys, your unit’s on fire, you need to get out!”

Startled residents can be heard replying, “Wait what?” as they try to process the chaos unfolding around them.

Another video shows an officer ushering a shirtless resident through his living room and out into the glow of the fire-lit night, shouting, “Run, run!”

Additional footage captures the frantic scene as officers continue clearing the building, with one heard yelling, “Hey everybody out!”

The body camera video, released by the St. George Police Department, shows the confusion and urgency officers faced as they worked to wake residents and get them to safety.

Officers communicated over radio about a man stuck in a second-floor apartment that was on fire. Footage shows the officers using a ladder to escort the resident to safety.

“There’s one more guy up there!” an officer yells.

One sleeping resident did not respond to an officer’s warning.

“Hey, building’s on fire, you gotta get out!” an officer yelled while shining a flashlight on the slumbering citizen’s face. Video then showed the resident wake up screaming as a loud bang occurred.

“You gotta go! Let’s go, let’s go!” the officer yelled as he yanked the resident out of bed.

“Come here buddy, I’m gonna lift you over the wall, it’s alright, okay?” an officer says.

A large explosion can be heard toward the end of the video as a mother pushes a baby in a stroller. One officer at the end of the video says a roof collapsed on top of him.

Eight officers who responded to the incident were sent to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, but all have since been released, according to the St. George Police Department.
