Luigi Mangione Requests Civilian Clothes for Hearing in CEO Slaying Case - Internewscast Journal
Luigi Mangione Requests Civilian Clothes for Hearing in CEO Slaying Case

As Luigi Mangione prepares for his next court date in New York, his lawyers have filed another pretrial request: they want the accused CEO killer to appear before the judge in regular civilian clothes rather than jail-issued attire.

Mangione is currently being held in federal custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. He is expected to return to court on Aug. 11 for a status conference before New York Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro.

Because Mangione remains in federal detention, defense attorneys Karen Friedman Agnifilo, Marc Agnifilo and Jacob Kaplan asked U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett to direct the Bureau of Prisons and officials at the Brooklyn detention center to accept clothing for the appearance. The requested items include a suit, shirt, socks and shoes without laces.

The proposed order submitted with the filing also asks that Mangione be allowed to wear the civilian outfit while he is transported to the Aug. 11 hearing.

“Mr. Mangione … does not have civilian clothes to wear for the court appearance,” the defense filing says. His attorneys added that they were asking the court to order the Bureau of Prisons and the Metropolitan Detention Center to accept the clothing, noting there was no objection from Judge Carro or the government.

According to the filing, neither Carro nor prosecutors oppose the request. Such motions are generally considered routine when a defendant in federal custody must appear in a separate court system.

The latest filing comes as Mangione’s defense team has continued an aggressive pretrial campaign surrounding the closely watched case, challenging restrictions on media access, arguing courtroom coverage limits violate constitutional rights and seeking to livestream portions of the proceedings.

Prosecutors with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office have pushed back, accusing the defense of making false and misleading claims about the court’s media policies in an effort to influence public opinion.

Mangione is accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel on Dec. 4, 2024, before fleeing the scene.

Authorities arrested him days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after an employee recognized him and alerted police.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state and federal charges stemming from Thompson’s killing.

News Outlet has reached out to Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, for comment.
