Mayor Zohran Mamdani did not offer a clear explanation Monday for why the city has yet to remove a growing homeless encampment near the Intrepid Museum, despite repeated complaints from neighborhood residents.
“We are focused on connecting New Yorkers to shelter and on establishing a pipeline to stable housing, not just moving New Yorkers from one place to another place,” Mamdani said during an unrelated news conference in Brooklyn.
“To this specific encampment that you brought up, we’re going to look into the details of that,” he added.
The Post reported last week on the group of homeless individuals staying outside the floating Midtown museum, noting that 311 complaints dating back several weeks remained unresolved.
Under the Mamdani administration, the Department of Homeless Services has taken the lead on encampment removals from the NYPD. Current policy calls for encampments to be cleared after seven days of outreach efforts.
That process, however, has not taken place at the Intrepid site, where people have been living along Twelfth Avenue near West 46th Street.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
