NYC Career Thief With 150 Arrests Busted Again Weeks After Release

A New York man with nearly 150 arrests on his record is back in custody, just weeks after he was released under the state’s bail rules, Queens prosecutors said Tuesday.

Shaquan Seth, 40, was arrested Monday after allegedly attempting to steal about $800 worth of Threshold candles from a Target on Jackson Avenue in Queens — a store prosecutors say he has targeted before, often for the same merchandise.

The Post reported last week on Seth’s long-running pattern of alleged thefts, which prosecutors say stretches back to 2009 and includes multiple incidents at the same Target location, including a June case involving roughly $600 in candles.

Despite the extensive arrest history, Seth was released on Aug. 7 because New York law generally bars judges from setting bail for many non-violent offenses, including petty larceny and certain burglary charges.

In the latest case, Queens prosecutors turned to a provision in the state’s bail statute known as “harm on harm,” which can allow bail in some non-violent cases that would otherwise be ineligible when a defendant is accused of repeated crimes involving injury or property damage.

Court records allege Seth entered the Jackson Avenue Target despite being banned from the store, loaded 40 candles into a pull cart and tried to walk out without paying.

He was charged with third-degree burglary and petty larceny.

At Seth’s arraignment late Monday, the Queens District Attorney’s Office requested that he be held without bail, but Judge Jennifer Saint-Preux set bail at $10,000 cash or bond.

Prosecutors also asked that the career crook be under home confinement if he makes bail.

Online records show that Seth is currently being held at Rikers Island.
