Oscar nominee and veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer talks 'F1,' reflects on his love of providing joy to moviegoers

LOS ANGELES — Deserving of the title “super producer,” Jerry Bruckheimer has been a dominant force in the film industry for over half a century. His impressive portfolio includes iconic hits like “Top Gun,” “Flashdance,” “Con Air,” and “Remember The Titans,” alongside beloved franchises such as “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Beverly Hills Cop.”

This year, Bruckheimer is heading to the Oscars with a nomination for Best Picture for “F1,” along with four other nods. His journey to the Academy Awards reflects his enduring influence in Hollywood.

Reflecting on changes in the Oscars, Bruckheimer recalls a time when the competition featured only five nominees.

“It’s always been a tough race. Back when there were just five nominees, those films seemed like they were guaranteed winners,” Bruckheimer noted. “With ten contenders now, predicting the outcome is much trickier. Sometimes, two films might even split the vote, making it even more unpredictable.”

In addition to Best Picture, “F1” has earned nominations for visual effects, film editing, and original score. Known for its thrilling high-speed action, the film is a typical Bruckheimer production, embracing the excitement of cinematic danger.

“It’s the kid in me,” said Bruckheimer. “It’s the movies that I loved when I grew up and want to give that same experience to audiences today that I got when I was a kid.”

Bruckheimer continued: “What I do is I create things or help create things with the team that entertain audiences everywhere. And that’s what ‘F1’ did. And that’s what ‘Pirates’ did. That’s what’Top Gun’ did. So the fact that we gave joy for a couple hours to people everywhere is the thrill for me.”

There are more thrills ahead for Bruckheimer as well. Among the many projects he’s working on: another “Top Gun,” “Heat 2” and a UFO movie.
