Pickleball player allegedly jolted into air by electrified fence at Olympic Training Center sues city

A Chula Vista woman has filed a lawsuit against the city after what began as a routine pickleball outing allegedly became a dangerous electrical incident.

Renee Love was reportedly rendered unconscious after she leaned against a fence that was allegedly carrying more than 100 volts of electricity. According to the Times of San Diego, Love said she had stepped to the sidelines at the Better at Pickleball courts at the Chula Vista Elite Athletic Training Center on August 19, 2025, and rested against a black chain-link fence to catch her breath.

The lawsuit, as reported by the Times, claims a faulty wiring job connected to a nearby light pole had electrified the metal fencing. When Love made contact with it, an electrical shock allegedly surged through her body and threw her onto the pavement.

Court filings say the forceful shock left Love with serious injuries affecting her head, back, and nervous system.

“Based on our investigation, this was not a danger that came out of nowhere,” Love’s attorney, Brian Mason, told the Times. “The responsible parties have an obligation to act immediately, whether that means closing the courts, warning patrons, shutting off the power, or making repairs.”

Love has brought legal action against the City of Chula Vista, Better at Pickleball, Elite Athletic Services, and Brandon Sieh. The complaint alleges gross negligence and premises liability, claiming the defendants failed to close the facility despite allegedly knowing about the hazard.

“Defendants failed to close the courts, failed to barricade or restrict access to the fence, failed to disconnect or shut off the dangerous electrical source, failed to authorize timely repairs, and failed to warn Plaintiff and other patrons of the danger,” the lawsuit states, according to the outlet.

Mason said the facility’s alleged failures subjected Love to a traumatic ordeal. “This lawsuit seeks to ensure that the people and entities responsible are held accountable,” he told the Times.
