A Texas capital murder suspect who was out on bond and failed to appear in court was captured Monday after a weeks-long manhunt for the fugitive.

“Earlier this morning, law enforcement apprehended fugitive Trevor McEuen,” announced the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office on their Facebook page Monday. They included a picture showing McEuen, dirty and without shoes, handcuffed in the back of a police vehicle.

McEuen had been evading capture since early May. He reportedly removed his ankle monitor and disappeared on the day his trial was set to commence for the 2023 shooting incident involving his neighbor, Aaron Martinez, who is a rancher and a horse trainer.

Following this case, Governor Greg Abbott has advocated for bail reform, including a proposal for a state constitutional amendment that would mandate Texas judges to refuse bail for individuals accused of violent crimes, such as murder.

On May 15, Abbott said the award for information leading to McEuen’s capture increased to $30,000, as he urged Texans to submit an anonymous tip to “help law enforcement apprehend this heinous criminal.”

The Republican governor said McEuen “is exactly why Texas must fix its broken and deadly bail system.”

The sheriff’s office promised additional details about the circumstances of the arrest would be released later Monday morning.
