Shooting outside Salt Lake City LDS church leaves at least 2 dead, 6 injured: police

In a tragic incident on Wednesday evening, a shooting outside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City resulted in two fatalities and left at least six others injured. The unfortunate event unfolded as attendees gathered for a funeral service.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints acknowledged the incident, confirming that it occurred near their meetinghouse located at 660 North Redwood Road in Salt Lake City. The shooting happened while a memorial service was in progress inside the chapel.

The Salt Lake Police Department reported that of the six injured individuals, three are in critical condition. Some of the victims were swiftly taken to a nearby hospital by private vehicles even before law enforcement officers arrived at the scene.

Reports indicate that officers responded to the scene following calls about gunfire during the funeral service at the Salt Lake City church.

In a statement, the church expressed its cooperation with law enforcement and appreciation for the quick response of first responders. They urged the public to direct any inquiries to the Salt Lake City Police Department and voiced their sorrow over the violence occurring in a place meant for peace and worship. The church also offered prayers for all affected by this heartbreaking event.

Senator Mike Lee of Utah condemned the shooting in a statement released on Wednesday, labeling it as an act of “senseless violence.”

“Join me in praying for the victims of such senseless violence and all the families of this church,” he wrote on X. “Please contact local law enforcement if you have any information about the perpetrators.”

FBI Salt Lake City said in a statement that it is aware of the incident and is offering assistance to local law enforcement partners.

The Denver Office Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said special agents are responding to a reported shooting incident in the 600 block of N. Redwood Rd. to assist local law enforcement in their investigation.

Police said they do not have a detailed description of a suspect’s vehicle, but officers are searching the area from Redwood Road to the Jordan River.
