New Tahoe ski death as student found at Northstar

In a tragic development at a Lake Tahoe resort, the body of a missing skier has been discovered, just days after a deadly avalanche claimed eight lives in nearby backcountry. The skier, identified as Colin Kang, was found on the black diamond Sugar Pine Glade trail at Northstar California Resort on Thursday. Kang, a 21-year-old student from San Jose State University, had been missing since Tuesday afternoon.

Kang’s death marks the third fatality at the resort in the past two weeks, though specific details about what happened remain sparse. His disappearance coincided with a severe snowstorm that hit the area, which also triggered a massive avalanche at Castle Peak, located just a 30-minute drive away, resulting in eight fatalities on the same day Kang went missing.

Authorities were alerted to Kang’s disappearance by his college ski team late Wednesday night. Upon investigation, they located his vehicle in the Northstar resort’s parking lot, leading to the search and subsequent discovery of his body.

It comes after eight people were killed in a huge avalanche at Castle Peak — a 30-minute drive away — as a huge snowstorm battered the region on Tuesday.

Kang was reported missing by his college ski team at around 11pm on Wednesday. Cops found his car in the Northstar parking lot.

The Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team deployed 15 skiers, a snowcat and two snowmobilers and found his body on the expert trail around 9am Thursday.

Northstar California manager Tara Schoedinger said: “We are heartbroken by this loss. Our deepest sympathies are with his family and loved ones, and with the team members who had the privilege of working alongside him.”

Stuart McLaughlin, 53, was killed at Northstar on Sunday and Nicholas Kenworthy, 26, died on an expert run on Feb. 12.

The latest death at a Tahoe resort follows the horrific avalanche at Castle Peak, near Truckee, where 15 backcountry skiers were smashed by the slide on Tuesday.

Eight people were killed, while one remains missing but is presumed dead. Six victims have so far been identified, named as Carrie Atkin, Kate Morse, Danielle Keatley, Caroline Sekar, Kate Vitt and Liz Claubaugh.

Six others, including five women and a man aged 30 to 55, were rescued from the mountain on Wednesday.
