WASHINGTON — The Trump administration filed a lawsuit Thursday against California election officials, seeking to prevent the state from counting mail-in ballots cast in next month’s midterm elections by people the federal government has identified as “likely” noncitizens until their citizenship can be verified.
The Justice Department said California failed to honor a 48-hour deadline to review a password-protected thumb drive containing 20,000 names. Federal officials believe those individuals may be noncitizens who were sent ballots for the Nov. 3 election, in which California mails ballots to every registered voter. Earlier this week, a senior Justice Department official warned that the state could face legal action if it did not comply.
