The Elmwood Park Zoo, situated in Norristown, Pennsylvania, has made a name for itself as the pioneering zoo in the United States to welcome canine companions alongside their human visitors during its special Dog Days events.
“The excitement is palpable as people bring their pets to the zoo,” shares Jamie Sheard, the Associate Director of Guest Services. “Pets are undeniably part of our families, and it’s wonderful to include them in these memorable experiences.”
Interestingly, many dogs exhibit the same sense of awe and curiosity as children do when encountering the zoo’s array of animals.
“For most canines, a giraffe is a completely novel sight,” Sheard remarks.
Celebrating its centennial two years ago, the Elmwood Park Zoo remains a cherished fixture within the community. Remarkably, it also holds the distinction of being the world’s first zoo to achieve certification as a Certified Autism Center.
Sheard adds, “We often have visitors who are accompanied by therapy dogs or emotional support animals. Our aim is to ensure everyone can enjoy the zoo with the necessary resources for a fulfilling visit.”
Dog days at the Elmwood Park Zoo take place Sundays and Mondays and all dogs owners are required to bring proof of vaccinations and sign a waiver.
