Authorities in Virginia have launched a manhunt for a suspect believed to have killed a sheriff’s deputy during a welfare check, officials reported.
The tragic incident occurred when Deputy Logan Utt was shot and killed while responding to a family member’s request for a welfare check, according to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon arrival, deputies faced gunfire from a man inside the residence. In the exchange, both deputies were hit, the sheriff’s office confirmed. Deputy Utt succumbed to his injuries, while the second deputy, protected by his ballistic vest, was injured but is currently in stable condition and undergoing medical evaluation.
The sheriff’s office released a heartfelt statement, saying, “Deputy Utt was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished family member, friend, and respected member of our law enforcement family. His service, courage, and dedication will not be forgotten.”
Having joined the sheriff’s department in 2023 following a military career, Utt’s loss deeply impacts the community he served.
Law enforcement continues to search for the suspect, who is considered armed and extremely dangerous, urging the public to remain vigilant.
“My office is closely monitoring this tragic incident,” Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger wrote on social media. “I encourage anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts to contact Virginia State Police. My thoughts are with the deputy’s family and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office as we work through this awful situation.”
