The White House didn’t let former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau forget a certain social media post.
Team USA ended a 46-year wait for Winter Olympics gold in men’s hockey when Jack Hughes scored the winning goal in overtime, securing a 2-1 victory over Canada at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games. Following the win, President Trump called to congratulate the team.
Using the event as an opportunity for a playful jab, the White House’s official X account referenced Trudeau’s past post that declared, “You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game,” after Canada’s win against the U.S. in the Four Nations Face-Off the previous year.
In a cheeky post, the White House shared an image of a bald eagle perched on a Canadian goose, aimed at Trudeau’s remark.
It wasn’t just the White House joining in on the fun. Former NFL player Robert Griffin III also made a playful comment directed at the former Canadian leader.
“We took your game,” Griffin quipped, revisiting Trudeau’s prior statement, accompanied by a photo of himself draped in an American flag.
Hughes scored the game-winning goal off a cross-ice feed from Zach Werenski, which set off pandemonium across inside the arena in Milan and across the United States as fans woke up in the early hours of Sunday to tune into the game.
“This is all about our country right now. I love the USA,” Hughes said in an interview after scoring the goal. I’m so proud to be American today. I love my country, I love my teammates. That’s American hockey right there. That’s a great Canadian team, but this means so much. We are such a team.
“The USA brotherhood in this team is so strong, so much support from ex-players. I cannot believe this. It could have gone either way tonight.”
