Zelenskyy congratulates Trump on turning 80 in birthday call, vows more Ukraine peace talks at G7 on Tuesday

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday that he spoke with President Donald Trump ahead of the G7 Summit, describing the call as productive and centered in part on efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy said he congratulated Trump on his 80th birthday and used the conversation to discuss what he called several key issues, with peace talks high on the agenda. He also said he wished Trump success in his efforts to help bring the war to a close.

“I have just had a great conversation with @POTUS,” Zelenskyy wrote. “I congratulated President Trump on his birthday, and we have had quite a detailed discussion about many key things – peace, surely, was among them.”

Zelenskyy also expressed gratitude for continued U.S. support, saying American assistance has remained meaningful throughout the conflict. He pointed specifically to military aid, writing that Ukraine remembers “every step of that support – from Javelins to Patriots.”

According to Zelenskyy, the two leaders also discussed possible steps that could help move peace efforts forward in the near term. He said he updated Trump on recent battlefield developments and told him that Ukraine’s position had grown stronger.

Zelenskyy said the conversation would continue in person at the G7 Summit, where leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States are set to meet for direct talks on major global issues.

The call came as Trump turned 80 and prepared to travel early Monday moring to France for the G7, where Ukraine and Russia’s war is expected to be s major topic. Trump will participate in a working session Tuesday morning with Zelenskyy at the summit, though not necessarily a formal bilateral meeting, according to a senior administration official.

The outreach also comes as European leaders seek to keep Trump engaged on Ukraine policy and push for renewed diplomatic efforts involving Kyiv, Moscow and Europe. European officials are expected to use the G7 gathering to press Trump on a plan to restart negotiations with Russia while also preparing additional pressure on Moscow.

Trump has hoped to have secured an Iranian peace treaty before the G7 and has long hoped his global peacemaking efforts would ultimately “end the death” in southern and eastern Ukraine, where Russia’s Vladimir Putin has sought to stake claim to large swaths of land during the ongoing war.
