Borussia Dortmund’s bid for Jadon Sancho would be scuppered if a financially strong club made a rival bid for the Man United outcast, according to reports in Germany.

The German outfit are working with the Red Devils on a deal to take the £73million winger back to the Bundesliga – more than two years on from his big move to Old Trafford – after the player was banished to train with the academy by Erik ten Hag.

Mail Sport reported this week that the 23-year-old is open to returning to Dortmund this season, a move that would mark the end of a difficult few months for Sancho, whose relationship with Ten Hag appears broken beyond repair.

‘I will not allow people saying things that [are] completely untrue, I have conducted myself very well in training this week… I’ve been a scapegoat for a long time, which isn’t fair!’ He wrote on his social media channels.

The situation has not improved – with the winger not featuring for United since coming on in a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest in August – and his former club Dortmund are frontrunners to take him on and attempt to rescue his career.

According to German outlet BILD, there should be ‘clarity within the next two or three days’ about whether Sancho will make the move back to Dortmund, saying the player has already agreed to rejoin them.

However, the report adds that Dortmund would be instantly outmuscled if any team with financially powerful resources entered the running for Sancho.

Sancho’s situation is delicate given that many teams would be reluctant to cover his eyewatering £300,000-a-week salary – a huge amount for a player who is out of form and has not played since the summer.

It goes on that United will pay for a ‘large part’ of Sancho’s wages to ensure the move happens – but if any club puts in an offer of a permanent bid then Dortmund may have trouble on their hands in winning the race.

Last summer, Sancho was linked to Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq – managed by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard – but the move failed to come to fruition.

The Middle Eastern outfit attempted to sign him on loan – but United wanted a £50m obligation to purchase, which the club could not afford.

Five months down the line, there is no doubt that Sancho’s value has nosedived and the report adds that United would be forced to accept any permanent bid ranging between £25m and £35m.

Sancho has only featured for a total of 77 minutes in the Premier League this season and United are already staring down a ‘gigantic loss of business’ even if they receive a permanent offer for the player.

The England international would certainly be sure of getting back to his best in Germany if his previous form is anything to judge by.

He scored 50 goals and laid on 64 assists across 137 games for the German outfit in an impressive spell that saw some huge teams battle for his signature, including United, Real Madrid and Chelsea.

At United, he was unable to replicate that quality as he struggled to adapt to life at Old Trafford – managing only 11 goals and six assists across two seasons.

Sancho’s uncertainty at United comes despite being named as the January choice on Man United’s official calendar.

The official United calendar, which has already been reduced from £10.99 to £6.60 on the club’s online store, also features defenders Raphael Varane (May) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (September).

Both players are able to talk to overseas clubs as of January 1 with a view to a summer transfer once their contracts expire.
